The Lovely Fujifilm S5 Pro

Introduced back in 2006 by Fujifilm, the FinePix S5 Pro was distinguished by its innovative SuperCCD sensor that was designed to emulate the tonal range of color negative film. This was done by implementing a unique sensor design that used two photodiodes (i.e., a primary and a secondary) with different sensitivity (i.e., higher and lower) per photosite on the sensor, as opposed to the conventional use of one photodiode per photosite. The camera’s processor would then combine the information from the two photodiodes to produce an image with much greater dynamic range and detail than conventional CCD sensors. Fujifilm further equipped the camera with a processor capable of superior noise reduction that allowed images to be shot as high as ISO 3200, which was really impressive at the time. Color reproduction from the sensor is exceptional as well, which we have come to expect from Fujifilm. Overall, this camera is truly a gem and I’m glad I have one in my collection.

Photos shown here were shot with the Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AIS lens and Nikkor 85mm f/2 AIS lens.
